March 1-October 31 is sea turtle nesting season. Loggerheads, green turtles, and leatherbacks can be found nesting on Florida's east coast. A large number of sea turtles (about 90%) nest along the Florida coast.
Most coastal cities require residents to dim outdoor lighting to reduce the impact on sea turtle nesting. Guided Sea Turtle Walks are the way to safely view sea turtle nesting areas. Barrier Island Sanctuary has tours available during June and July.
The announcement to close the Port Canaveral lock gates in December 2019 was made on Friday July 26, 2019. The routine maintenance includes overdue repairs (last maintenance was over 10 years ago according to Space Coast Daily).
